Part of my solo exhibition ‘Indefinite’ at Pataka Art + Museum, Porirua from December 18th 2020 - January 31st 2021.
Painted by hand, without the aid of masking tape.
Quite often I use the same shape of board for several different paintings, playing with achieving a different perceived three-dimensional form within the same outer shape. 90 Degrees is one of those variants - it is the same outer shapes as Pocket and Billow.
The name of this painting comes from a mistake I made - I accidentally glued the mounting block onto the back in the wrong orientation. I tried to accept it and live with it, but the painting just didn’t look right, it wasn’t the way I had envisaged it when I was painting. I eventually removed the block and corrected the mistake, so now it looks the way I’d always intended. I’m much happier with it now!
