This is part of my Chroma series, which evolved from the stripes and gradients that began to appear in my previous Spatial Memory series.
The name of this painting is slightly cryptic, but it’s related to what I see when I look at it (and the answer to that is definitely not what I intended when I started painting it! If you work out the reference let me know!!) - but actually, whatever you see is right, even if it’s not what I see. I think art should be interpreted by the viewer in whatever way resonates for them.
The Chroma series started with the chance to try something new for an exhibition before Christmas - a lovely opportunity to step outside of my current work and ‘play’. I created two very minimal paintings - and despite how it appears, I find that minimal does NOT mean quicker or easier! There is less room for getting things a little wrong, in my opinion. The perfectionist in me can’t tolerate something that looks just a little ‘off’ when you go very minimal, so getting the final result just right is surprisingly time consuming.
